This "Eco-house" is a modern addition to a terrace of 19th Century coast guard cottages
in Gosport. It is a self-build project, currently under construction by Jon Tyrrell,
one of the directors of MTA Architects. It has a highly insulated timber frame and
a number of other energy efficient features which should make it almost self-sufficient
in energy use terms. The basement is constructed from insulated interlocking polystyrene
blocks which act as permanent formwork. Other features include: heat recovery plant,
water storage tanks for rain water and grey water recycling and a wind turbine for
generating electricity. The open plan living space and two storey fully glazed conservatory
allow plenty of natural light and provide passive solar energy.
