This new house is located on the site of a former village hall next to a mainline railway. The Client bought the site with planning consent for an ordinary house and then commissioned MTA Architects to design a much more exciting building, in harmony with its environment. A main feature of the house is an imposing granite stone wall which runs parallel to the railway and forms the spine of the house. The wall appears like a castle providing an apparently impregnable barrier against noise of the trains and the ‘outside world’. A stone stair tower announces the front entrance and white rendered walls enclose external steps curving upwards to this breach in the wall. A neatly crafted timber and glass box containing a snug / TV room projects through the granite wall and is suspended high above the driveway and offers an enticing glimpse of the house behind the wall.
