The practice was started in 1967 and has established an excellent reputation for designing successful buildings. A lot of our work is repeat business for long-standing clients who value good design and the service we can provide.


MTA Chartered Architects Ltd are an RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Chartered Practice with professionally qualified staff who offer a full range of architectural services. We have also won a number of awards, including the prestigious Civic Trust Award.


Creating sustainable buildings is an important part of the office philosophy. We have wide experience with environmentally friendly building methods and low energy technologies.

Our Team

Jonathan Ling-Cottey

Director - BA(Hons) Dip Arch RIBA

Jonathan graduated from Birmingham University with a 2:1 BA Honours Degree in 1989 and Post Graduate Diploma in 1993. Jonathan qualified as an architect in 1997 and over the years has gained considerable experience in large and small practices throughout the country picking up several design awards along the way. Jonathan joined the Brixham office of MTA in 2013 as Senior Architect and became a director in 2014. Jonathan’s specialism’s include listed buildings and conservation projects and is a Conservation Architect registrant.

Jon Tyrrell

Director - BA(Hons) Dip Arch RIBA

Jon originally qualified as an Architectural Technologist in 1983 but his interest in design lead him to qualify as an architect in 1990. Graduating from Portsmouth University with a 2:1 BA Hons degree in Architecture in 1986 and then going on to graduate with Distinctions in Portfolio, Thesis, and overall Diploma in Architecture in 1989.  Jon Joined MTA in 1990 and has been at the forefront of the design lead approach to projects ever since.

Brian Farmer

Director - MCIAT

Brian joined MTA Architects in 1971 and has a wealth of experience in building projects, particularly in the South West. His thorough knowledge of construction methods and proven track record of designing attractive and successful buildings make him well placed to offer advice on all types of buildings from historic houses to “state of the art” commercial buildings.

Tony Schelestynsky

Associate - MCIAT

Tony is a qualified Architectural Technologist with over 35 years experience of designing successful buildings. He gained much of this experience in London on a range of residential, transport and commercial projects. One of the larger of these projects was the rebuilding of the Chinese Embassy in Portland Place. Tony joined MTA in 1987 and has since been made an Associate. His thorough understanding of the design and construction process and attention to detail has strongly influenced the creation of many well crafted and high quality buildings.

David Taylor

Architectural Technician & Visualisations Specialist - ACIAT

Dave joined the practice in 2002 as an architectural assistant and went on to study a higher national certificate in construction at South Devon College to broaden his abilities in design, production and management. After achieving outstanding results, he has now been accepted as an Associate member of The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. In addition to his academic achievements gained during his time with MTA Chartered Architects, he has become an expert in CAD, 3D modelling and visualisations.

Samuel Amoah

After following a career in civil engineering, Sam qualified in Architectural Technology and Construction Management in Vitus Bering University, Denmark.

Since 2004 Sam has worked in Ireland and the UK with a number of Architects firms specialising in conservation and listed building projects as well as large retail and commercial projects.

Sam joined MTA in 2017 and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team.

Dawn Scrivener

Office Manager

Dawn joined the practice in 2001 after a career in administration and banking. Dawn keeps everyone organised and ensures the office runs smoothly and efficiently across both our Devon and Hampshire offices which is key to our success.
