New residence, Orchard House, Paignton

The design followed a traditional Arcadian typology incorporating a series of connected bays each of which are expressed externally and completed with a pitched vaulted gabled roof with a lowered eaves line with fenestration proportional to each of the bays. The materials have been chosen to reinforce the link to the land with a natural stone plinth coursing anchoring the house to the ground and then combinations of lapped timber boarding and painted render provide a backdrop to the room openings, each of which is outlined with banding or casing. The overall composition creates a strong domestic identity and sense of place and presents a dwelling very much grounded in its landscape and locality.

The plan is reasonably simplistic in its order of functions. The ground floor is dominated by a large open-plan arrangement of living room, dining room and kitchen that run laterally across the width of the house each of which taking full advantage of the views out into the garden and the bay. The other feature is the large pool house at 90 degrees to the plan which extends out into the garden at a reduced floor level corresponding with the slope of the ground. The upper floor is laid out as a series of bedrooms each with balconies facing out to sea.
