The Battery

Located in an enviable position within Torbay, The Battery sits directly on the coastal edge with unobstructed panoramic sea views across the bay. The clients’ brief was to replace their existing out-dated property with a modern house that would befit its coastal location and provide a sense of solidity and protection against the elements.

The northern facade features large areas of glazing and extensive terrace and balcony areas to make the most of the stunning coastal location, while the southern facade is more closed and private from the roadside with the introduction of solid stone and zinc clad walls.

The use of locally sourced Devon limestone with its warm pink tones with strata of red sandstone relates directly to the local geology and evidenced in the rocks below; the zinc metal cladding visually links the industrial maritime heritage of the town and has a crafted simplicity. As counterpoint to these the east-west spine wall is finished in white through-tone render with white silica sand, and at the centre of the plan, beyond the entrance lobby sits the main feature space; a double height dining room with helical stair to first floor level. Here the buildings two axes are evident and expressed through their materials.
