Residential extensions Winsu Avenue
The new extensions are designed in a way which compliments the overall composition of the original 1930’s house, taking reference from its volumes, shape, materials and colour palette all of which are translated in a contemporary design approach. The two storey side extension has been designed to bookend the building and rebalances the symmetry of the frontage which is clad in the principal material of red zinc. The palette of materials has been chosen to harmonise with the original colour tones of the property so that the overall composition of the form, scale and appearance works collectively and demonstrate that contemporary design solutions can sit harmoniously in regions which are often architecturally ‘quiet’ and without challenging the preconceptions of domestic architecture. Good design can reinforce the qualities of the past and build upon those traditions without the need for pastiche or tacit replication which often creates more harm.
